You Went Down

Ok, so I like to think of myself as a pretty good illustrator most of the time. I've designed for many movies, illustrated dozens of books, created a whole world of Rayguns, robots and intergalactic racism with Dr. Grordbort's (new book in November plug plug).
So I thought, 'I wonder how excellent am I at animation?".
Turns out, not very.

Nevertheless, the results are out on the internet and hey, all in all, they're kinda cute.

Oh yeah. You might be wondering how these hyper realistic moving images were created. Is it some new version of Maya running on twelve Playstation 3's? Or did he get the render wall at Weta Digital cranking for a few weeks? Neither of these is true.
It's a little app, like Colors for the DS called Animanatee that you can create quick animations on.
I did almost all these lying in bed at night when I shoulda been reading a clever book.

Enjoy.

Hey can you send me some of that talent in a bottle or something?
I can pay by cheque from my very reliable bank account in the Cayman island...

That's HILARIOUS.

I was listening to my iPod instead of the computer, so William Shatner was singing "You're Gonna Die"("You'll Have Time") in the background. Awesome.

The key skill in animation is in conveying motion and body language and you've got that nailed (in the head, with a stray bouncing nail-gun, probably).

That's quite an epic! I laughed, I cried... threw up just a little bit at the back of my throat. All signs of a great viewing experience. Can't wait for the next one...

Thanks! What very nice things to say. I will now give up this Grordbort's shit, designing for feature films etc...and start my career in half-arsed animations of accidents.

Do it Greg! Don Hertzfeldt seems to be doing fine. :)

I'd never heard of this Hertzfeldt dude, but I just had a look and watched this:

"accidents"?! Some of those are totally pre-meditated.

Greg Broadmore said...

Yeah, maybe accidents should be in quotes.

I was curious about what you worked on for District 9? i saw a recent trailer, the aliens and mechs look fantastic! I love how exposed and functional everything looks on the robot.

Thanks for the info Greg, i really enjoy Neil's films, its great to see how D9 is all coming together.

Greg Broadmore said...

Hey Ben,
I don't want to be too specific about D9 just yet- the movie isn't out and I don't want to give away too much.
I was the Lead Conceptual Designer on the film and designed the majority of the tech, weapons, ships,Exo suit etc.. and fair bit else.
I also production designed our builds on the Weta workshop floor.
It was, from a design standpoint, a very small team for the bulk of what you see on screen - David Meng and Leri Greer, and myself (although for the first few months of preproduction a lot of designers at Weta contributed to get things rolling).
I hope you enjoy the film!
I'll probably put up a few concept pieces after it comes out.

Just came back from D9, brilliant work! i was on the edge of my seat the whole time, design/storytelling/everything was top notch.

I was curious how long it took to design and build the mech? The functionality on everything was really incredible. Was a physical prototype ever built or was it all digital?
